The Green Book Chauffeur Hat

During segregation and the Green Book era, Black travelers often wore chauffeur hats while driving, especially in luxury or newer cars. This was a safety tactic — if they were stopped by police or harassed, the hat gave the impression that they were a driver for a white employer, not the owner of the car. In a time when owning something nice could put your life at risk, that small detail could mean the difference between passing through safely or facing danger.
